IFM position following WHA 2001
In May 2001 the World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA54.2 on infant and young child nutrition. The resolution urges Member States to "...strengthen activities and develop new approaches to protect, promote and support exclusive breastfeeding for six months as a global public health recommendation, taking into account the findings of the WHO expert consultation on optimal duration of exclusive breastfeeding and to provide safe and appropriate complementary foods, with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond..."
IFM supports the implementation of the above global public health recommendation, taking into full account the report of the expert consultation (A54/INF.DOC./4) IFM also encourages governments when formulating their national policy to take into consideration the importance of meeting the nutritional needs of each infant and young child, as outlined in the conclusions and recommendations of the expert consultation.
IFM continues to support the science-based process engaged in by the WHO to develop a global strategy on infant and young child nutrition, of which the Expert Consultation was part. We look forward to a continuation of WHO’s efforts to ensure that health policy-making is based on solid and up-to-date scientific research.
