Infant Formula Standard

The text of a revised Standard for Infant Formula and Formulas for Special Medical Purposes Intended for Infants was adopted at the Codex Committee on Nutrition for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) meeting held in November in Thailand. Both parts of the Standard will advance to Step 8 for final adoption by the next Codex Commission meeting in July 2007.

The Standard includes improvements in the composition of infant formula for the use of healthy infants as well as in formulas for special medical purposes. These improvements benefit infants whose mothers cannot or choose not to breastfeed. The standard also serves as the basis for food regulation worldwide, and provides a benchmark for countries that do not have their own formula legislation in place.

Attending the CCNFSDU were 254 delegates from 45 countries and 27 international organisations, among them ISDI, the International Special Dietary Food Industries represented the International Association of Infant Food Manufacturers (IFM). The infant food industry has taken part in the ongoing discussions which lasted 10 years, sharing its technical expertise with the Codex committee.
