Introduction to the Infant Food Industry

IFM member companies are keenly aware of their responsibilities concerning the health and well being of infants and young children; they place their welfare first at all times. They support the aim of the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, as well as educational efforts about the benefits of breastfeeding.

At the same time, member companies ensure that high-quality, nutritious, infant formula is available for babies that need a breast milk substitute. They are committed to providing a wide variety of safe, adequate complementary foods when breast milk or infant formula becomes insufficient to meet the nutritional requirements of the growing infant.

Companies that choose to join IFM recognise that parents, with the help of their health advisor and armed with accurate and unbiased information, should make their own decisions about infant feeding.

IFM and its member companies cooperate with governments and other concerned parties to develop science-based laws and regulations in support of the WHO Code. They also cooperate with the Codex Alimentarius Commission in promoting food-related scientific and technological research, and in developing food quality and safety standards. Additionally, member companies continue to support and conduct research, and encourage post-graduate education on nutrition of infants and young children.
