IFM and its member companies draw on the collective expertise and experience of their core business to improve health and nutrition for millions around the globe. For example, member companies work hard to educate consumers and health care workers about the best health practices for newborns and young children. They are also committed to using and disseminating the best scientific research in the nutrition field as a way to ensure that infants and young children thrive. Food safety is another top concern. Several member companies are involved in projects that address these issues.
Projects:
Gerber's Start Healthy Program teaches new mothers methods to instill good eating habits in their babies from day one. From breastfeeding to baby exercise, this program gives mothers advice, tips and suggestions for healthy newborns, infants and toddlers. Gerber also offers live advice through its toll free number and encourages parents to "call or email anytime, day or night."
Wyeth is a primary corporate participant in the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), a public-private partnership within the international community that has enabled needed vaccines to reach millions of children in the developing world.
Wyeth is also partnering with GAVI to provide a pneumococcal vaccine for use in developing countries. A study conducted by a partnership of organizations in the international health community and involving 40,000 South African children showed that a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine developed by Wyeth could save the lives of 500,000 children yearly in poor countries. Prior to the development of this vaccine no protection against pneumonia was available for young children.
Wyeth is also helping fund the provision of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for a five-year clinical trial in the Gambia, as part of one of the largest clinical trials of its kind in a developing country. The Medical Research Council (U.K.) is conducting this study in cooperation with other organizations and agencies in the international health community.
In order to emphasise the importance of food safety and to reward its employees for their efforts, each year Numico presents the Food Safety Award. Every Numico factory receives a score for its results in the areas of quality and food safety. The factory with the highest score or the factory that has made the most progress is awarded the prize.
